Heidelberg Research Laboratory is a comprehensive programme aimed at junior scholars in Assyriology.

Innumerable cuneiform tablets gather dust in museum storerooms and more still await discovery buried deep in the soil. The goal of the Heidelberg Research Laboratory Ancient Near East is to teach the basics necessary to decipher these unpublished or undiscovered cuneiform texts. Those essential skills cannot be acquired through reading alone: they must be learned in practice during hands-on work with cuneiform artefacts. With this in mind, we are introducing innovative teaching formats which can assist the international participants in gaining expertise in this challenging field.
